Ubuntu’s linux-firmware-hwe plan separates package preparation from later firmware delivery. In a November 6, 2026 message, Ubuntu developer Juerg Haefliger described initial metapackages for Tenacious and a later stage with actual firmware for Resolute. A personal Launchpad archive lists 19 Tenacious packages, while Haefliger said sponsorship and package-set inclusion were still needed at the time of his message.
To understand what this plan would deliver, look at each release stage’s package contents, not just the package names.
The first packages are metapackages
Haefliger described the first linux-firmware-hwe packages, prepared for Tenacious (Ubuntu 27.04), as metapackages: packages that depend on other packages rather than carrying the firmware themselves. His November 6 message said the Tenacious packages were ready but still needed a sponsor and addition to the relevant package set.
That distinction matters because the first step organizes dependencies; it is not the later firmware payload described for Resolute. The plan’s intended benefit is to align firmware updates more closely with Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernels, Ubuntu’s kernel updates for newer hardware support. Phoronix reported that the approach also aims to reduce potential kernel-and-firmware incompatibilities and the work of identifying individual files for backports. Those are intended benefits, not measured results.
What the Tenacious PPA lists
Haefliger’s personal Launchpad archive lists 19 packages for Tenacious at version 20261106. The package names include identifiers such as linux-firmware-hwe-amd-graphics and linux-firmware-hwe-intel-wireless; the listing also covers other hardware families, including Realtek, Qualcomm and NVIDIA.
The PPA entries show package preparation in that personal archive. In his November 6 message, Haefliger said sponsorship and inclusion in the package set were still outstanding steps. NeoTeo previously covered Ubuntu 26.10’s release, which provides context for the Stonking release named in this firmware plan.
The planned stages across Ubuntu releases
| Ubuntu release | Planned stage | Package role |
| Tenacious, Ubuntu 27.04 | Initial package preparation | Metapackages depending on existing firmware packages |
| Stonking, Ubuntu 26.10 | Stable release update (SRU) | Planned update route for the package change |
| Resolute, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS | Later stage, around its first HWE kernel | linux-firmware-hwe is planned to carry firmware backported from Stonking |
Florent “Skia” Jacquet clarified in the Ubuntu-devel discussion that Stonking would receive an SRU as the Tenacious archive was opening. Haefliger described the Resolute firmware as a later step tied to the arrival of its first HWE kernel, without giving a calendar date.
