Microsoft’s optional KB5127936 update, dated October 28, 2026, documents a staged rollout of Cloud Rebuild for Windows 11 25H2 and 26H2. Its notes spell out two useful details: the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can reuse eligible saved Wi-Fi profiles, and IT administrators can configure and start a rebuild remotely through Recovery CSP. Microsoft’s update notes describe availability as staged, so devices receive the feature over time rather than all at once.

Saved Wi-Fi can help WinRE get online

Cloud Rebuild downloads a Windows image and device drivers from Windows Update. When Windows will not start, the recovery process runs from WinRE, which needs internet access to retrieve them. Microsoft says WinRE can reuse eligible Wi-Fi profiles already saved in Windows, including profiles for supported certificate-based networks. The capability is on by default, and IT administrators can disable it.

That can spare a user from entering Wi-Fi credentials in recovery when the saved profile qualifies. It does not remove the network requirement: Cloud Rebuild still needs an internet connection, through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and the PC must be able to reach WinRE.

IT can configure and start rebuilds remotely

For managed devices, Microsoft says administrators can configure and initiate Cloud Rebuild remotely through Recovery CSP. They can use the Windows build already installed or specify a target build. That gives IT a way to start the recovery process without relying on someone at the PC to launch it in Settings or WinRE.

For the basic reinstall mechanics, see NeoTeo’s earlier Cloud Rebuild explainer. The update’s administrator controls apply to managed recovery, while the data-removal choices matter to anyone using the feature.

Choose the removal option with care

Cloud Rebuild removes local files, accounts, apps, and settings. Files kept in OneDrive or another cloud service are not affected, according to Microsoft’s Cloud Rebuild instructions.

The consumer flow offers Remove files and Remove & sanitize. The first is faster; sanitization takes longer and cannot be undone. For sanitization, users can choose the Windows disk only or all disks. The Windows-disk-only option keeps files on other disks.

Before starting, save any local files you need and make sure WinRE can connect to the internet. Cloud Rebuild removes local data as part of the reinstall.

Microsoft cautions that sanitization depends on the PC’s storage hardware, and Windows cannot independently verify what the disk did. For a company or legal erasure requirement, Microsoft advises checking with the PC manufacturer.
