Sometimes we leave a file on our computer and then wish we could access it remotely. Cloud storage is one of those shortcuts, and then there are tools like TeamViewer for more direct control. Today we came across an alternative called Ulterius, which offers the advantage of working on a web browser, without the need for auxiliary clients.
I usually use TeamViewer to help friends in trouble with their computers. The process is so simple that it has become the favorite of many scammers around the world. All you need is a copy of the main software on one side and a simple client on the other. However, for personal remote access, this server-client combo may not be so convenient. Web browsers have gained many functions in recent times. Why not use one as a client? In reality, that comes down to finding the right software, and Ulterius looks like a solid option.
Everything starts by setting up the server on the computer you want to access. The download is about 20 megabytes, and we didn't detect any false positives or conflicts with antivirus. Once installed, Ulterius runs a small daemon in the background, whose icon gives us access to the control panel. To enter the remote computer from the browser, there are two options: if the connection is on a local network, we use its IP address, accompanied by the corresponding port (for example, 192.168.1.5:22006). If the connection is going to be over the internet, we use the public IP address. Ulterius supports uPnP (which theoretically takes care of all port forwarding), but if there's a particularly strict router or firewall in the middle, additional adjustments will be needed.
We also shouldn't forget that most ISPs tend to change IP addresses, so it's recommended to note the new number. What exactly can we do with Ulterius? In our test, I didn't find any limits, as it requests user credentials (the Ulterius server won't work if the Windows account isn't password-protected), and the session extends its privileges. File system, connected cameras, and even a system terminal are available. Ulterius is free, and its only software dependency seems to be .NET Framework.
