One of the most interesting aspects of creating images with artificial intelligence is the possibility of extending their dimensions in any direction, and adding or reconstructing content when necessary. The new Uncrop tool developed by Stability.ai promises to reduce the entire process to a couple of clicks, leveraging the resources of its current Stable Diffusion XL model.
In recent weeks, Adobe introduced its "Generative Fill" feature for Photoshop, essentially incorporating Firefly's virtues into the popular editor. With its help, users can insert new objects, change the background of an image, and extend its dimensions without loss of quality or distortion in aspect ratio.
But that feature is not exclusive to the Adobe universe. In fact, Stable Diffusion enthusiasts have experimented for months with outpainting, turning their 512x512 pixel images into much larger works. The problem is that their results are not usually consistent across all models, however, Stability.ai wants to change that with Uncrop, a new tool available on its Clipdrop portal.

It all starts with selecting the image to process, or alternatively, dragging it into the browser window. The second step is to define the final size, either with custom values (Custom), or by applying one of the three available presets (Square, Portrait, or Landscape). Fortunately, Custom mode does not sacrifice precision, and allows us to specify the final dimensions pixel by pixel.
At this point is when I usually share my own results, and I certainly got them… but the process was torture. With a waiting queue that exceeds 7,000 images, limited credits even for those who decide to sign in with an account, and a semi-freeze after 200-300 images, the free trial of Uncrop leaves much to be desired. Logically, its goal is to get users to join the subscription model, which among other things allows skipping the queue and removing all restrictions, but the price varies depending on the region.
In summary, the theory of Uncrop is very good, and there are definitely many users interested in an automatic outpainting solution backed by Stable Diffusion, but its execution has not been the best so far. You will need a lot of patience, and I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a week's head start so things stabilize a bit.
