A new horror genre is arriving with Unfriended, a film that presents a group of friends terrorized on Skype by an anonymous person looking for the one responsible for uploading a video that led to a young woman's suicide.
Unfriended begins when, on April 19, 2013, Laura Barns commits suicide after becoming the object of ridicule because an embarrassing video of her was uploaded anonymously online. The main suspects are a group of classmates who were especially cruel to her, since Laura was the most popular girl in the school. After the young woman's first anniversary passes, the group of friends gathers to talk via Skype, but they are surprised when an unknown user appears using Laura's account, looking for the person responsible for uploading the video. Otherwise, someone will die.
The premise of Unfriended is to use an unknown figure who terrorizes the group of teenagers, threatening that if they disconnect or stop talking, someone will die. As expected, as the conversation progresses, the truth about who posted the video begins to emerge, along with several secrets that each member of the friend circle had kept. Unfriended premiered last year during the Fantasia Festival, drawing a good reception, so get ready because the director has stated that he plans several sequels in the near future.
The cast of actors is not very well-known (most are young people debuting with this release, while others had some supporting roles in movies and series), with a leading cast composed of Shelley Hennig (the recent Ouija and the current series Teen Wolf), Renee Olstead (Still Standing), Courtney Halverson (Leprechaun's Revenge), Heather Sossaman, Moses Jacob Storm, William Peltz and Jacob Wysocki, among others. Produced by Bazelevs Company, the film will be the directorial debut of Levan Gabriadze. Unfriended is scheduled for release on April 17, 2015 in theaters.
