If you were scared by Unfriended and want more, don't worry, because within a month its sequel arrives. Titled Unfriended: Dark Web, the plot now focuses on a more realistic story that will show you the horror in the depths of the web.
Three years ago, Unfriended was released, a horror film belonging to the new genre we call “Webcam Horror”. Although the movie follows the found footage style, its novelty lies in its format: Unfriended is told through the screen of a MacBook, where a group of friends are connected via Skype and begin to fall victim to a paranormal entity. Thanks to the success of that film, Universal Pictures gave the green light for a sequel titled Unfriended: Dark Web, and you can already watch the first trailer.
This time, Unfriended: Dark Web is a standalone sequel that borrows the concept; that is, it has no relation to the events of the previous film but maintains the format of being told through computer screens in real time. In fact, the supernatural element will not be present, focusing instead on a more “real” story that tells how a teenager gets a laptop and finds a cache of secret files on it. Without wasting time, the teen starts a Skype video call with his friends to share the information, where they discover the unsettling nature of the files, and that the laptop's owner is watching them and will do anything to get his property back.
If you were a bit paranoid about what you might find on the Dark Web, there's no doubt that after seeing this film your desire to access it will vanish completely. After all, curiosity killed the cat. This standalone sequel stars Colin Woodell, Betty Gabriel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Andrew Lees, Connor Del Rio, Stephanie Nogueras, and Savira Windyani. Produced by Blumhouse Productions, it is the directorial debut of Stephen Susco (screenwriter of The Grudge, The Grudge 2, and Texas Chainsaw 3D). Unfriended: Dark Web will be released in theaters on July 20, 2018.
