Valve said on October 8, 2026, that SteamOS 0.4 had been released for all Steam Frame users. The update brings power-management, streaming, interface, audio and accessibility changes. Valve says power efficiency and battery life can improve by up to 12% during both local gameplay and streaming, with results varying by framerate and content. To install it, open Settings → System on the headset.

NeoTeo previously covered the SteamOS 0.4.3 beta in an earlier article; Valve's October 8 announcement concerns the SteamOS 0.4 release for all Steam Frame users.

Power, battery and VR streaming changes

The up-to-12% figure is Valve's claim for both power efficiency and battery life during local gameplay and streaming. The result varies with framerate and content, so the stated maximum is not a promised gain for every session.

For headset fit and display behavior, SteamOS 0.4 adds Presence Sensor Sensitivity under VR Settings → Startup / Shutdown → Presence Sensor. Its high-sensitivity option is intended to keep the displays on in a wider range of conditions, including when glasses spacers are used.

Valve also lists clearer color during VR streaming and a fix for a headset chroma regression. Other changes address streaming audio reliability, wireless-adapter connectivity issues in some countries, rare network-interface disruptions, and a keyboard that failed to appear during streaming.

Spectator-view smoothing is enabled by default. You can turn it off in VR Settings → Developer. The spectator view is accessible through Steam → Settings → Remote Play on a PC, or on a device that supports Steam Link.

Interface, audio and accessibility updates

The update fixes controller-binding loading problems in games including Google Earth VR and Thumper. It also addresses dashboard focus and navigation, dashboard flicker, and returning from Desktop mode to Gaming mode. Browser changes include fixes for crashes and Linux H.264 detection.

On audio, Valve says downmix and binaural rendering now have matching volume across formats. The accessibility options include selecting a dominant eye, which controls the eye used for spectator view, screenshots and related functions. After enabling advanced settings, users can also limit eye tracking to one eye.

SteamVR requirement for Error 17

To reduce Error 17 connection issues, Valve says the PC must also run SteamVR 2.18.2 or later. At the time of the SteamOS 0.4 release, SteamVR 2.18.2 was on the SteamVR beta branch.
