In early February, we told you about the Vestas V164, a beast of a wind turbine that has spent recent years breaking one record after another. Now, the next step for Vestas is to kick off a global program to combine its turbines with the latest energy storage developments, and one of its new partners is none other than Tesla.
If a state or corporation wants to carry out a wind energy project, chances are they'll get in touch with the folks at Vestas. Of course, the market has strong competition (General Electric's renewable energy division is gigantic, for starters), but Vestas has become number one through record after record. The costs of wind energy are plummeting, and many developments point in that direction; however, there are some consistency details that still need to be sorted out. The wind isn't something you can control, and the key is to make the most of every period of abundant generation, then face times of scarcity.
In response, Vestas has launched a global program to evaluate different energy storage options. Available information indicates that there are ten active projects under this program, and one of them involves none other than Tesla. For a long time now, Elon Musk and his masterminds have been trying to take Tesla's technology beyond electric cars. The storage platform in Los Angeles, the island converted by SolarCity, and his famous "we'll do it in 100 days or it's free" in Australia are good examples.
But the story doesn't end there. If we go by the words of Vestas president Bert Nordberg, the company is willing to make a series of small acquisitions, and once it determines the most favorable solution, proceed to a larger purchase. Nordberg even floated a number: 3.2 billion euros in cash. Interested in entering the wind energy market? The time is now, because Vestas is looking for something to buy.
