There’s been no shortage of criticism about wind turbines: they ruin the landscape, require heavy maintenance, or don’t generate as much energy as believed. The first point is almost absurd, the second varies with each design, and the third depends on the region. But one thing is certain: the Vestas V164 located in Østerild is a true monster, and it has just shattered a new generation record: nearly 216,000 kilowatt-hours in 24 hours.
A Monster on the Danish Coast
Humans are capable of building truly impressive things, and one of the most striking examples manifests itself through wind turbines. Their scale varies according to different parameters, but those installed a few kilometers from the coast tend to be gigantic. That brings us to the Østerild Test Station in northern Denmark. There, the prototype of the Vestas V164 turbine was built—a titan with a 140-meter tower, 220 meters at its highest point, and 35 tons per blade (some sources say 38). It was activated in January 2014 and has done nothing but break records ever since.
A New 24-Hour Record
In October of that year, it reached 192,000 kilowatt-hours in 24 hours, and on December 1, with winds more favorable than expected, it recorded 215,999.1 kWh in the same period. The average household energy consumption varies greatly from one country to another, but it’s often cited as about 3,200 kWh per year in Spain. That means the Vestas V164 generated in one day the same energy a Spanish home would need for nearly seventy years (assuming constant consumption). Another noteworthy fact is that the Vestas V164’s power has changed—it started at 8 MW and was ultimately raised to 9 MW.
Why It Makes Sense
Despite its size, the Vestas V164 makes a lot of sense for its potential customers. By generating more energy than traditional models, wind farms need fewer units, which in turn reduces operational and maintenance costs. In theory, each V164 is prepared to operate for 25 years, and 80% of its materials can be recycled.
