The film production company Paramount Pictures has just uploaded a video to its YouTube channel where you can watch the first five minutes of Ghost in the Shell. The video in question is an action sequence from the film's opening scene, which has been shown in pieces in the various teasers and trailers: the Major stands atop a building listening to an important conversation during a meeting until a group of armed men bursts into the room. Immediately after, the Major jumps from the building's roof, activating the camouflage during the fall, then shooting her way into the room, taking out each of the armed men and saving a human from the claws of a cyborg.
While the scenes are very reminiscent of those of the 1995 animated film, there is a definite increase in detail and effects that weren't available 22 years ago. On a purely stylistic level, the scene is a fast-action homage to the last four decades of techno-thriller films: the Blade Runner-like horizon and the visualization of the world of The Matrix. It's enough to overwhelm the senses and make it look truly appealing. Based on the eponymous manga by Masamune Shirow, this adaptation features a cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han and Juliette Binoche. Produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), Ghost in the Shell will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on March 31, 2017.
