The work of Masamune Shirow that began in manga and continued in anime reaches the big screen. After twenty-eight years of waiting, here is the first trailer of the American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson.
A Cyberpunk World
In 1989 Masamune Shirow created the manga Ghost in the Shell (published in Spain under the title Patrulla Especial Ghost). The story takes place in a cyberpunk world where humans have been able to incorporate cybernetic implants into their bodies, enhancing the natural capabilities of the human being. A world where cybernetization is commonplace and robots are extremely identical imitations of humans, all connected through their ghosts (a kind of soul) to an internet or cyberspace where all data created by society resides.
The manga has two direct continuations in that medium, but it has also received three movies and three anime series (the last one was Arise), which follow the missions of Major Motoko Kusanagi and her colleagues from Public Security Section 9, a special operations force made up of former military officers and police detectives, who must solve cases tied to the continuous attacks of cyber criminals and technological terrorists. After twenty-eight years of waiting, the American adaptation of Ghost in the Shell finally arrives, following once again the story of the Major, a human-cyborg hybrid who leads the covert operations of Section 9.
The Trailer and Its Cast
This time Section 9 must face a new enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage the artificial intelligence technology of Hanka Robotic. From what can be seen in the Ghost in the Shell trailer, the action seems a combination of The Matrix and Blade Runner, and some scenes perfectly replicate images from the Japanese film released in 1995. This adaptation boasts a cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt. Produced by Paramount Pictures and directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), Ghost in the Shell will open in theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on March 31, 2017.
