WAU Manager: Update Manager for Windows 10

Like it or not, automatic updates accompany us in the... “experience” that is Windows 10.

Previously we have recommended solutions like StopUpdates10 and StopWinUpdates to block (at least for a while) these unwanted updates, but there are users who have problems with the very structure of Windows Update, because it doesn't even allow a custom installation.

That's where WAU Manager comes in, a new update manager for Windows 10 that adds an extra layer of control.

The Return of Optional Updates

The latest round of news related to Windows 10 and its update system suggests that Microsoft will enable (or rather, bring back) the optional updates category. In Windows 7, that category contains everything related to drivers and secondary modules that aren't entirely critical to the operating system's functioning, but in Windows 10 the strategy is “install everything and be done with it”, ignoring any specific user need.

The good news is that this will change a bit. The bad news is that we'll have to wait until Windows 10 20H1, that is, two feature updates in the future.

Manage Your Updates with WAU Manager

What can we do today? Simple: if Windows Update doesn't understand it's wrong, we'll have to look for a replacement. That's where WAU Manager comes in, a new update manager for Windows 10 and earlier versions. The first option in WAU Manager is to disable automatic updates. Both systems can work together without conflict, but the idea is for WAU Manager to take the helm.

In the second section we find three working modes: “Normal” is the classic one that looks for updates but asks before downloading and installing, our favorite in previous Windows versions. “Passive” looks for, downloads, and installs hotfixes, only showing progress. “Silent” is the same as “Passive”, with the difference that it only shows a notification after installation. WAU Manager also lets us specify the type of updates (software, drivers, or both), and schedule the exact time of execution, combined with the rest of the configuration.

Isn't that enough? Then you should know that WAU Manager can uninstall updates, detect hidden updates, and bring them back. WAU Manager is free and portable, doesn't require a conventional installation, and I haven't noticed any major dependencies.
