WebЯcade: A 'Super Emulator' of Retro Consoles in Your Browser
Retro console emulator

Playing a classic video game again or browsing the catalog of an old console is as simple as finding the original files (or a modern port) and installing the right emulation environment. But what if you could skip that second step? That's what the WebЯcade project makes possible: a multi-system emulation platform that works directly in a compatible browser, with no extra software.

RetroPie, Recalbox, Batocera, Lakka... when it comes to emulation, there are plenty of compatible environments. Each has its advantages, but generally, you can't go wrong. The main alternative is to get dedicated emulators for your favorite platforms and configure them separately, which many users prefer in specific cases (ScummVM or DOSBox for DOS games). But there's another option: the browser.

Yes, the web browser on any computer, latest-gen console, or relatively modern mobile device can become an emulation space for dozens of retro consoles. The key is to use WebЯcade, a frontend that gives you access to retro systems like the Atari 2600, Nintendo's Game Boy family, and special engines (think Doom Classic).

WebЯcade: Access Your Favorite Retro Games in a Web Browser

The standard feed includes several games, but you can load your own with relative ease.

WebЯcade's potential is enormous, thanks to its feeds system for loading games. Of course, nothing stops you from using the default feed as a demo, where you'll find plenty of freeware, classics like Elite, a faithful version of Another World for Game Boy Advance (authorized by Éric Chahi himself), and the shareware version of Doom. But once you master building feeds (the basic editor tutorial is here) and manage to load them to Dropbox, the only things you need to run your games are a browser with WebЯcade and an internet connection.

Elite for NES. Glad to see it, but not the best version...

In contrast, this Another World works very well under Game Boy Advance

The latest version of WebЯcade supports consoles like the Nintendo 64 (experimental), saves your savegames to the cloud (in-game, not savestates), and lets you create standalone links to share access to a specific game (avoiding the need to browse the whole feed). You can also connect a gamepad to WebЯcade, which is a good idea since some game commands are nearly impossible to translate to the keyboard.

And of course, Doom

There are no profiles or subscriptions. The only technical demands are a bit of time to learn feed creation, a Dropbox account for your games, and enough processing power. Link below!
