Gemini’s in-chat editor supports PDFs on the web and mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code are web-only; Google announced the feature on October 29, 2026. (Google’s announcement)

Which file formats work on web and mobile?

Google lists PDF editing for both the web and mobile. The other formats in its announcement are web-only, and a separate Google Workspace notice also lists LaTeX documents for web editing. (Google Workspace notice)

If you need to edit one of the web-only formats, use Gemini on the web rather than on a phone. Google’s announcement describes the mobile option specifically for PDFs.

How the editing flow works

Google’s demo follows a study-guide PDF from uploaded notes through a table-to-chart edit and PDF or Drive export.

Ask Gemini to create a file, preview it in the chat, then expand it to full screen to make manual edits. You can also highlight text, ask a question about it, or prompt Gemini to refine selected text or visuals. (Google’s announcement)

Google’s demo starts with uploaded handwritten notes and turns them into a PDF study guide. The user selects a table, asks Gemini to show the information as a chart, then exports the PDF or saves it to Google Drive.

Google’s Workspace notice also describes opening slide decks in Google Slides or downloading them as PPTX or PDF, opening spreadsheets in Google Sheets, and uploading documents and PDFs to Drive. (Google Workspace notice)

Which accounts can use the editor?

Google lists personal Google accounts, Google Workspace customers, and Workspace Individual subscribers as eligible. Its notice says there is no administrator control for this editor specifically; administrators manage access through the broader Gemini app setting. (Google Workspace notice)

Notebookcheck reported on November 1, 2026, that its web test in Germany found the editor working with a free Google account. That is one outlet’s dated test, separate from Google’s October 29 announcement.

Uploading a file and editing a generated file

In Google’s demonstration, uploaded notes are source material for a study guide that Gemini creates and then edits. Separately, Gemini Apps Help describes file uploads as a way to get answers, summaries, and insights. (Gemini Apps Help)

Keep confidential information out of the chat

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub advises users not to enter confidential information they would not want a human reviewer to see or Google to use to improve its services. (Gemini Apps Privacy Hub)
