Nokia 3310. The phone behind the meme. Turned into one of Finland's "national emojis" in honor of its extreme durability. its return in 2017 didn't have the expected impact (the price never helped), but its reputation of absolute invulnerability remains intact. However, some YouTube enthusiasts have decided to put it to the test. One of them is a certain Finnish madman with a hydraulic press, although this time he decided to raise the stakes... placing the Nokia 3310 in a particle accelerator.

In my personal opinion, the whole process deserves its own "behind the scenes". I mean, how does someone come to the conclusion that they need to place a Nokia 3310 in front of a particle accelerator? Where do you start? Who do you have to convince? The point is that Lauri Vuohensilta and his wife Anni, masterminds behind the Hydraulic Press Channel on YouTube, ended up with privileged access to the 10 MeV particle accelerator installed at the University of Helsinki. Here's what happened during the session:

Beyond the broken English and laughter, Lauri and Anni give us a brief tour of the accelerator, until the camera focuses on the "victim", the Nokia 3310. Classic model, blue color, working but without a SIM card, ready to receive all the power of the device. For safety reasons, nobody can stay near the phone once the accelerator is activated, and the final result is... the most radioactive Nokia 3310 in the world. Physically, nothing happened to the phone except for a small brown spot three millimeters wide on the back (which they forgot to film).

The Results

10 MeV is the maximum limit for an electron accelerator used in the food irradiation process... and that means that after the Nokia 3310, they placed a cucumber. Then came a doll with a small aluminum foil hat, and finally, the same doll without the hat. Conclusions? The Nokia 3310 did not become a black hole (too bad), the cucumber didn't explode, and the aluminum hat helped protect the doll (a little). And as expected, all objects became "permanent residents" of the university, since they are now radioactive.
