WhatsApp announced optional parental controls for teen accounts on September 30, 2026. Parents and teens set them up together to manage selected account settings; WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain private and end-to-end encrypted.

What parents can manage

The controls cover selected profile, group, Channels, Status and Meta AI settings:

  • Profile photo: Parents can choose who can see the teen’s profile photo.
  • Groups: Parents can choose who can add the teen to groups and receive alerts when the teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group grows substantially.
  • Channels and Status: Parents can manage how the teen uses Channels, whose Status updates the teen can see, and who can see the teen’s Status updates.
  • Meta AI: The available choices are the default “13+” setting and “Limited Content.”

Personal messages and calls stay private

The controls let parents manage selected account settings and receive group-related alerts, not view personal conversations. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption, so people outside a chat—including WhatsApp—cannot see or hear them.

A parent-set PIN for relaxing settings

If a teen wants to relax a selected setting, a parent-set PIN is required to approve the change, WhatsApp says.
