WhatsApp was reported on October 5, 2026, to be rolling out a server-side operating-system check that can stop some Android and iPhone accounts from logging in until the phone is updated. The rollout is described as affecting specific accounts, not every older phone.
The reported login check
The reported warning tells affected users to update their phone’s software before trying to log in again. Because the check is handled server-side, it does not depend on having a particular version of the WhatsApp app.
The warning also explains how to check the phone’s installed operating-system version. It cannot be skipped, according to the report.
WhatsApp’s general Android and iPhone requirements
WhatsApp lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer as generally supported. Its published compatibility guidance says iOS 15.5 or newer will be supported starting November 30, 2026. Those are general compatibility requirements; the reported login check is a separate, account-specific measure. WhatsApp’s compatibility guidance

What to do if the warning appears
Open your phone’s Settings and look for a software or system update. Install the latest compatible update available for the device, then reopen WhatsApp and try to log in again.
If the phone cannot install a compatible update, the reported restriction prevents the affected account from logging in on that device.
