A report published October 30, 2026, said U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Edward Markey were investigating privacy and safety concerns involving Meta’s AI glasses and had asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to respond by November 26. The reported inquiry is a request for answers, not a legal finding.

What Wyden and Markey reportedly asked Meta

The reported questions cover accidental camera activation, tampering with the recording indicator, and whether faces and license plates are blurred during some AI interactions. The senators also asked about employee or contractor access to images, the use of images to train AI, and human-rights reviews and safety testing before release.

How Meta describes the glasses’ data paths

Meta distinguishes ordinary button captures from visual data generated during AI experiences. Meta says photos and videos taken with the capture button while the capture light is on are stored privately on the glasses until they are imported to a phone. It does not classify those captures as visual data from AI experiences. Meta says that AI-experience visual data, such as images and video from live AI and other multimodal features, may be used to improve products, including to train AI models, through automated or human review processes. (Meta’s visual-data policy)

Meta says users can turn off “Store visual data from AI experiences” in the glasses settings in the Meta AI app. The change applies to future visual data: Meta says it will not be stored or used for product improvement or made available for human review. It does not reverse processing already completed. The setting also excludes voice interactions, media shared with Meta AI on other services, certain content that may violate Meta’s terms or policies, and metadata.

Some features may send media to Meta’s cloud for processing and temporary storage for up to 30 days before automatic deletion, according to Meta’s cloud-media policy. That is a separate description of cloud processing and retention; Meta’s visual-data policy addresses human review of AI-experience visual data.
