Playtonic Games is a new game studio made up of several former Rare members from the Nintendo 64 era. Among them are the designers of Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country: Chris Sutherland, Steve Mayles, and Steven Hurst, as well as composer Grant Kirkhope. The creative talent of this team seems determined not to leave behind what they do best: platform games. And just a week before E3 2016, they presented the trailer for Yooka-Laylee, the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie.

Yooka and Laylee's Adventure

The heroes are Yooka, the green chameleon, and Laylee, a big-nosed bat. Both characters must explore Hivory Towers to find the Pagies (golden pages) needed to explore the mysterious Grand Tomes in their fight to prevent Capital B and Dr. Quack from absorbing the entire world of literature and turning it to their own benefit. Yooka-Laylee puts you in control of the dynamic duo in an adventure where they must complete a series of challenges to earn Pagies. These golden pages serve as the game's currency, allowing you to unlock new worlds or expand those already unlocked. Additionally, each world is governed by a Boss that you'll have to fight.

Yooka and Laylee can purchase new abilities from Trowzer, a snake that wears pants, as well as find and equip a series of special objects that modify their abilities. In fact, the characters will be able to transform into different forms, granting them more abilities to use. Furthermore, sequences like the minecart in 2D and 3D, similar to those from Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong 64, will be included. But the best part is that the game will feature a local cooperative multiplayer mode for two players, and another mode for up to four players with eight different mini-games. Yooka-Laylee is being developed by Playtonic Games and will be available on Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Xbox One. The game doesn't have a specific release date yet, but it's expected to launch in early 2017.
