The story of Assassin's Creed introduces Callum Lynch, a death-row criminal rescued by Abstergo Industries, the modern incarnation of the Templar Order. He is now forced to take part in the Animus Project, a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, where Callum experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th-century Spain. There he learns he is a descendant of the mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and gains impressive knowledge and skills to fight the oppressive and powerful Templar organization of the present.
Based on Ubisoft's popular franchise, the Assassin's Creed movie is set in the same universe as the games and features an original story that expands the series' mythology. The struggle between Assassins and Templars to control the world now focuses on Callum, who with the help of Sophia Rikkin, a member of the Animus Project, revives Aguilar's story. Interestingly, the Animus is not a chair with a virtual reality helmet as seen in the first game (nor the Helix version from recent installments) but rather a kind of arm crane that allows Callum to perform his ancestor's movements.
Fans of the games can rest easy: Aguilar looks like a true Assassin, leaping across rooftops and equipped with the double hidden blade, a deadly signature weapon of the series, when fighting off several guards. The film stars Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), with a supporting cast including Jeremy Irons, Ariane Labed, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. Produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures and New Regency and directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), Assassin's Creed will be released on December 21, 2016.
