Today we unexpectedly discovered that Bandai Namco announced Dragon Ball Fighters, the new game in the saga in 2.5D. The striking thing is that we didn't expect an official announcement until June 12, so we can suppose that it was likely an accident. What we do know is that the game will be developed by Arc System Works and will see the light next year on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

A Saga With Ups and Downs

The story of Akira Toriyama's saga in the world of video games has seen everything—games that fascinated us and others that deeply disappointed us. In recent years, Goku and his friends have gone by without much fanfare. Dragon Ball has received all kinds of installments over 30 years. There have been successes like the Butoden (1 and 2) for SNES, the Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi sagas for PS2, and the Super Butoden for Sega Saturn. And there were also those that infuriated us, like Ultimate Battle 22 (PSX), Final Bout (PSX), and Battle of Z (PS3). Dragon Ball Fighters will carry the weight of recent years where they haven't been able to find the definitive game, and here's what it's all about.

What Dragon Ball Fighters Has to Offer

With just two images, Dragon Ball Fighters has gotten more than a few of us excited. Its gameplay will feature a 3 vs 3 team system as well as ultra-fast fights and movements faithful to the anime series' animations. Another aspect that has been revealed is that the game will be neither 2D nor 3D but will be 2.5D—a 2D mode with 3D camera angles that gives a sense of realism more in line with the Japanese saga.

Those of us who love the series always hope for a fun game, with a roster like the one Budokai Tenkaichi 3 gave us (with some Super characters) and one that returns the love the previous generation took away. We'll wait until June 12 to see if Bandai Namco reveals more information about this new hope in the saga.
