Previously we have explored the origin and workings of barcodes and we have an excellent free QR code generator at our disposal. However, when it comes to installing a barcode reader for Android, we often find that free features are limited or don’t work well. Fortunately, there are alternatives like Binary Eye, which is not only free and open source but also works with older versions of the operating system.
On most current Android devices, reading QR codes and barcodes is left to Google Lens, but that app is not without errors, and not all devices are compatible with it. There is always something new to learn from a product or service just by reading its main code, and it is a bit unfair that other Android builds lose support from one update to the next.
The problem with other barcode readers for Android is that they abandon support just as quickly, their free versions are very limited, or they bombard the user with ads. Fortunately, the app Binary Eye is a formidable exception. Its developer Markus Fisch offers it for free, without advertising, and under an open source profile, both on the Google Play Store and in other stores.

Aim, and wait. Binary Eye will show the code content almost immediately. If it’s a barcode, the app can estimate the country of manufacture of the product in question, and if it’s a QR code, it also calculates details like the error correction level. Binary Eye’s compatibility depends on the ZXing module (Zebra Crossing), which extends to a total of 17 different formats.
As if that weren’t enough, Binary Eye has a function to generate codes (Compose Barcode). In this case, support is a bit more limited (11 formats), but it offers UPC-A and QR, enough for most applications. The QR code generator allows customization to store more information and make reading easier (for example, some Kindle Fire models have trouble with physically small codes).
Binary Eye is available for download on the Play Store, F-Droid, and directly as an APK on its GitHub profile. The minimum Android version is 2.3 Gingerbread, so any device manufactured in the last 10-11 years works with this app. Now, do you want to do the same on PC? Don’t leave!
