The sequel to Blade Runner has been in the oven for more than seventeen years. Goings and comings, pauses, name and role changes, confirmations and absences, money problems, rights, dates... a production nightmare like few others. However, the ship began to sail a bit straighter in 2015. The return of Harrison Ford was confirmed, other actors were added, principal photography began in July, and in October Warner gave us the official name: Blade Runner 2049. Here is the first trailer.
Next year, Blade Runner will turn 35. Its original release was problematic (courtesy of caveman executives who knew nothing about cinema), and the critics were deeply divided back then, but today most believe it can step into the ring with 2001: A Space Odyssey and fight for the title of best science fiction film of all time. Anyone who decides to watch it now should definitely look for a copy of the so-called "Final Cut", the only version in which Ridley Scott had complete creative control. From a solid Harrison Ford as Deckard to the perfection of Rutger Hauer's monologue, Blade Runner is an unforgettable film... but it also left many unanswered questions. That leads us to its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, and its brand-new trailer.
Thirty Years Later
Thirty years have passed, and Deckard's fate is a mystery. The world has gone down the drain, with a completely destroyed environment and no sign of recovery. Everything seems to indicate that replicants are still "a problem" for some, which keeps the need for Blade Runners firmly on the streets. The new story centers on one of those agents, known as K. This Blade Runner discovers a very well-buried secret that could blow the little that remains of civilization to pieces, but that discovery will make him cross paths with the missing Deckard.
Cast and Release Date
In the cast of Blade Runner 2049 we find very interesting names. In addition to the return of Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, the role of K will be played by Ryan Gosling. The female presence is important, with Ana de Armas (Exposed), Sylvia Hoeks (The Best Offer), Robin Wright (The Princess Bride), Mackenzie Davis (The Martian), and Carla Juri (Wetlands). Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Barkhad Abdi (maybe you remember him from Captain Phillips), and none other than Jared Leto round out the list. Its release in the United States is scheduled for October 6, 2017, with distribution by Warner (Columbia Pictures in the rest of the world).
