Mr. Miyagi is no longer around. Daniel is now a successful man, but he will once again have to face an old nemesis from his past. Next year, Daniel and Johnny return to the dojo in Cobra Kai, the sequel to The Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio, on YouTube Red.
The Karate Kid is an American martial arts franchise created by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. It began in 1984 with The Karate Kid and was followed by three sequels and a remake: The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), The Next Karate Kid (1994) and The Karate Kid (2010). The first three films follow the story of Daniel LaRusso, a young man who learns karate through the eccentric mentorship of a janitor named Mr. Miyagi. Who would have imagined that three decades later Ralph Macchio and his old nemesis played by William Zabka would return to the dojo in Cobra Kai, the sequel to The Karate Kid in series format that will premiere for the YouTube Red service.
The duo will resume their roles as the underdog Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and the bully Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) in a ten-episode series. Cobra Kai will be set in the present day, thirty years after the events of the Karate Tournament of the original film, and revolves around Johnny, who, in search of redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. He again reignites his rivalry with a now successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). It is thus how both men have to face the demons of their past and the frustrations of the present in the only way they know how: through karate.
Cast and crew
Cobra Kai will star the original stars of The Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) will write the script with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (both worked together on Harold & Kumar and American Reunion) while the latter duo will direct most of the series, which will be developed by Sony Pictures Television Studios. Cobra Kai will consist of ten episodes, each half an hour long, and will be broadcast exclusively on YouTube Red in 2018.
