I never thought I'd say this, but Intel needs good news. The beating it took from the market has been historic, its financial situation is far from ideal, and its direct competitors are offering very interesting products. In fact, the new Qualcomm chips and the possibility of running Windows on ARM represent a big problem for Intel, and its official response comes through the new Core Ultra 200V series. What does it promise? Much better battery life in laptops, without the compatibility limitations that come with x86 emulation.

"Windows on ARM". It's no longer a feverish delusion from Microsoft, based on half-baked chips with dubious support. Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite is no silver bullet, but its combination with Windows 11 puts an acceptable environment on the table for many basic tasks. Add to that the battery life advantages associated with this architecture, and the question is, what is Intel going to do about it?

Granted, Intel has had a rough time in recent weeks, but it can't sit back and do nothing. All it needs is to offer a competitive option (both in price and performance), with autonomy similar to or better than Qualcomm's. That option comes through the new Intel Core Ultra 200V family, which, in addition to optimizing battery life, also includes better graphics, and neural processors for Copilot+ certification.

"The Battery Myth". Intel decided to go to war, and 20 hours with x86 doesn't sound bad at all...

Unsurprisingly, Intel aims to directly attack the battery life that ARM laptops offer. Using the same chassis and the same battery with the same OEM, an Intel Core Ultra 7 268V records 20.1 hours under UL Procyon, compared to 18.4 hours for the Qualcomm X1E-80-100. However, Intel admits that its chip is two hours behind Qualcomm's solution (10.7 vs. 12.7) when it comes to a Microsoft Teams 3x3 session. The keys? Integration of RAM into the processor package, and TSMC manufacturing. In theory, Lunar Lake steps into the ring… and it's a good start.

If we look closely at the list of available SKUs, we find basically two categories: The Intel Core Ultra 5 with 8 MB of Smart Cache, Intel Arc 130V graphics (seven cores) and a 40 TOPS NPU, and the Intel Core Ultra 7 and 9, which have extended Smart Cache memory to 12 MB, Intel Arc 140V graphics with eight cores, and an NPU ranging from 47 to 48 TOPS. In all cases, the configuration is 4P/4E/8T (four performance cores, four efficiency cores, and eight threads), with base frequencies of 3.5-3.7 GHz, and a Turbo that reaches 5.1 GHz on the most advanced model.

Intel wasn't going to stay quiet here: Besides being faster in games (no x86 translation overhead), it also highlights those titles that simply don't work on ARM.

In short, Intel's official slides are our only source so far, and every one of its statements will have to be put through the fire of benchmarks, but the wait won't be long: The first laptops will arrive at retail on September 24.
