And in another episode of "Windows 11 is more bloated than Kylo Ren", our search for applications to optimize the operating system continues. The latest developments bring us to DFX WinTweaks, an open source script based on Visual Basic that concentrates several options to remove universal apps, disable OneDrive, delete Cortana, and activate the famous "God Mode" of Windows, among other things.
Recently we talked about the portal Privacy is Sexy, which offers more than 600 scripts compatible with Windows to change multiple aspects of the operating system. Personally, sometimes I get tired of chasing the problems Windows 11 suffers (with performance and lack of customization at the top of the list), but Microsoft offers no respite. The price of peace is eternal vigilance, and if something strange appears, the only option is to intervene.
That's how we arrive at DFX WinTweaks, the evolutionary step of DFX Tweaker developed by 'ivandfx' on GitHub. Its latest version (3.4 at the time of writing) is almost identical to the previous one, with the only detail that it drops support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.x. If you want to use the script on those operating systems, the most effective thing is to download the 3.3 ESR build from the Releases section. Version 3.4 will only work with Windows 10 and Windows 11.
How to optimize Windows with DFX WinTweaks
Being a Visual Basic script, it is likely that some browsers have a thing or two to say, but we have not received any warning during our tests. A double click on the VBS will execute CScript, which in turn will request elevation of privileges, to finally reach the main menu of DFX WinTweaks.
The available sections are six: Tweak Settings, Experimental Tweaks, Safe Mode Settings, Quick Settings, Shutdown Settings, and Presets Beta. The most important is Tweak Settings, where we can customize Windows (dark mode, God Mode on the desktop, classic Control Panel view, etc.), apply performance tweaks (e.g., stop BitLocker and WiFi services if we don't use them), remove all universal apps, reduce the impact of Windows tracking, and disable OneDrive, Cortana, or Windows Defender.
As a closing note, I would like to mention the possibility of disabling 'core parking' in the Experimental Tweaks section, especially useful for those who want to extract a little more performance from their CPU. However, I must also warn about two things. On one hand, DFX WinTweaks makes some mistakes when going forward and backward in certain menus. One of them repeated every time we entered Tweak Settings-Customization, and when trying to go back, it always sent us to the Windows Defender menu. And on the other hand, the most obvious: I definitely recommend making a restore point before applying these tweaks.
