Audio solutions in many computers are basic to the core, and don't enable many advanced options to improve your PC sound. Fortunately, alternatives like FxSound exist, formerly known as DFX Audio Enhancer. In addition to enabling a customizable equalizer with a dozen presets, FxSound was declared freeware by its developers, removing all its previous restrictions.
A classic problem: With the appearance of new platforms, we have always been forced to abandon functional and very good quality hardware due to lack of ports and slots. For example, there are excellent sound cards out there that are exclusively PCI, and unless you can find a motherboard with legacy support or an adapter, they are destined to stay in a drawer gathering dust.
As if that weren't enough, integrated audio solutions are usually quite poor, with drivers that leave a lot to be desired. Some enthusiasts offer modified drivers online, but if you want to improve your PC sound, you generally have two options: pay the premium for new cards, or explore software-based alternatives to optimize the output. One of the most interesting is FxSound, formerly DFX Audio Enhancer, which was recently relaunched as freeware without limitations.
How to improve your PC sound with FxSound
The FxSound interface is very simple: a giant button to turn the equalizer on and off, volume sliders and band controls that allow us to customize the frequency of each. For example, do you want to clone the Winamp equalizer or another program's in FxSound? All you have to do is specify the frequency in each band and save the preset. Additionally, to the left of the equalizer we find additional controls for clarity, ambience, Surround sound, dynamic Boost and Bass Boost.
Now, if you don't care to manipulate all those controls separately, FxSound offers a dozen presets ready to use. The list includes entries for movies, TV, music, streaming and gaming, but there are also values oriented to voice and transcription. The differences can be enormous, and I recommend that you explore all the presets. With a bit of luck you won't need to modify anything, but nothing stops you from using one of them as a starting point.
