For several days, Google has been teasing an event that will take place today, and it was expected that the star would be the new Pixel smartphone. However, a Canadian company and a British one published images of the two models that the Mountain View giant plans to launch into the market…
This is the rumor control, here are the facts: The Google event scheduled for today is still on, but we already have a fairly solid idea of what we'll see there. Most teasers point toward virtual reality and news related to home devices (a new router, and a rival for Amazon Echo), although the main reason is the awaited Pixel smartphone. The Nexus 6P has been on the market for a year, and even though it's not a low-quality device, the feeling that Mountain View wants to retire the Nexus family is undeniable. Of course, the strategy behind the Pixel confirms that the only way to provide the purest Android experience to consumers is by controlling the manufacturing process, but Google still depends on external OEMs, in this case HTC (things apparently went quite badly between Huawei and Google after the Nexus 6P). Everything was well on track for its official presentation on October 4… until a couple of companies messed up.
According to the available information, the first was a Canadian mobile connectivity provider, Bell. A few hours later, the British store Carphone Warehouse presented more images and specifications. Combining the data from the leaks leads to the conclusion that both smartphones, the Google Pixel and the Pixel XL, will be equipped with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC at 2.15 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, two cameras (12 and 8 megapixels), USB Type-C connector, fingerprint sensor, NFC support, 32/128 GB internal storage, and Android Nougat as the operating system. As for screens, the Google Pixel will have a 5-inch panel with Full HD resolution, while the Pixel XL goes up to 5.5 inches and QHD resolution. The batteries are 2,770 and 3,450 mAh respectively. Other details highlight the new Google Allo assistant, unlimited storage in Google Photos, the Duo video chat app, and customized protective shells.
As expected, the leaks were quickly corrected, but the Web moves much faster. If we have to talk about the appearance of the smartphones, I think the best word to describe it is “generic”. Many users on the Web wonder why the ends of the smartphones have such a large surface. Most likely Google has placed sensors there, but that will be one of the things to confirm at the official presentation. As for its price, nothing firm yet, although several portals leaned toward a very uncomfortable $649.
