Mars and Hell await you to keep facing the demonic hordes, but now the action comes from a new point of view with a new protagonist: DOOM VFR, the next DOOM that will be in virtual reality.
Virtual Reality Comes to DOOM
The surprise announcement from Bethesda Softworks that it would bring the DOOM franchise to virtual reality generated plenty of excitement and speculation when it was revealed at E3 2017. Now, the developers have released a new video detailing some of the features that will be available in DOOM VFR, the next DOOM in virtual reality.
For starters, you won't be playing as the Doom Slayer. Instead, you take on the role of Dr. Peters, a scientist working at the installation assigned to the Bio Force Gun program — better known as the iconic BFG weapon. Peters dies, but for some reason his consciousness lives on inside the computer system, allowing him to take control of a fully armed security robot. That gives you access to massive firepower to cut through the demonic hordes.
New Abilities and Explorable Environments
The gameplay of DOOM VFR will take you back into battle against the demonic hordes. Now, with control of a robot carrying Peters' consciousness, you can hack systems to open new routes, fix machines, and command other robots and vehicles. Teleportation and dash mechanisms have also been added — quick movement that makes the action more intense as you advance through firefights.
Robert Duffy, chief technology officer at id Software, explained that there will be some new and familiar areas within Mars and Hell that integrate seamlessly into the virtual reality environment. You'll actually be able to explore the vast environments and see things that weren't present in the previous game. The developers affirm that DOOM VFR is an independent experience from the DOOM that came out last year.
Platforms and Release Window
DOOM VFR is being developed by id Software and will be available on PlayStation VR and HTC Vive.
The game doesn't have a concrete release date, but it's expected to arrive by the end of 2017.
