Last year we talked about DownThemAll!, a classic download manager for Chrome and Firefox. Several projects have been inspired by its interface and flow to provide more complete management, and that brings us to DownZemAll!, which works as a standalone application, supports dozens of sites, and offers BitTorrent compatibility.
In general, our daily downloads are solved with a single click, but there are files out there that need a bit more attention. I'm talking about true "digital bricks", ISO images, high-definition videos, and anything that takes up several gigabytes on disk. I recently lost a 7.5 GB download when there were hundreds of megabytes left due to a "network error", and that led me to look for an alternative manager that works outside the browser. That's how I came across DownZemAll!, inspired by the classic DownThemAll!.
DownZemAll!: Large Downloads and Torrents in One Place
The DownZemAll! wizard divides its actions into five categories: we can download the content of a web page, download files in batches, audio and video streams, a list of URLs, and the combination of torrents and magnets. In its Preferences menu, the most important thing is under the User Interface section, where we activate the Spanish language and explore the list of hosts compatible with stream downloading.
The Torrent section has values that are very familiar to us, such as the maximum number of connections and peers per torrent, upload and download limits, and the folder for sharing content. However, the Advanced section presents an even more complex list of parameters to optimize BitTorrent downloads and, if possible, squeeze a few extra kilobytes out of the connection.
DownZemAll! works independently, but its developer offers a Chrome extension called Down Right Now, which captures downloads and links. Personally, I've noticed it doesn't work well with Edge, but it's not a mandatory resource. The important thing here is that DownZemAll! is flexible, free, open source, and doesn't drag in strange dependencies.
