The numbers are clear: Google Chrome completely dominates the browser market, and even those browsers that share the same technology are far behind. The only real alternative for PC users is Firefox, but the masterminds at Mozilla remain lost in the fog, and if we want to see a different kind of action with that code, we should explore variants like SlimBrowser, which includes a more robust download system and the same compatibility as always when it comes to extensions.
Have web browsers fallen into an evolutionary pit? Many users think so. Their new features behave like bloatware, reduce performance, and ruin the overall experience, not to mention the constant collection of information. Both Chrome and Edge talk to their mother ships, and the remaining Chromium flavors have their own quirks. At first glance, SlimBrowser is just a clone of Firefox with minimal appearance tweaks, but you don't have to go too far to find the first changes. One of them is the integrated ad blocking (as always, we ask you to make an exception for NeoTeo, since it helps us a lot), which eliminates the need for an extra extension. However, the most important thing about SlimBrowser is its download manager.
If we look for something to compare it with, the “Turbocharged Download Manager” reminds us of the old DownThemAll!. On the one hand, it has support for downloading YouTube videos (something many users keep demanding despite Google's refusal). And on the other hand, certain downloads must be configured manually. Within that configuration we can define the exact path and the number of connections to establish. Obviously, the final performance depends on each server, but it is still a positive aspect.
Now, SlimBrowser is not free from problems. The browser suffered a spontaneous crash during our tests (even with hardware acceleration disabled), and its downloader doesn't always detect videos. With all its years of development, SlimBrowser still feels like a work in progress, but if it adopted a tighter update cycle, it could remove all those sharp edges.
