After everything that happened in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, fans are wondering what the future holds for the franchise. Goku is practically a god, but there's no doubt that formidable opponents exist out there. While Toriyama and his team think about that, we must travel to Peruvian lands, where the folks at Cygnus Producciones are preparing Dragon Ball: La Leyenda de Gokú, a new live action that (I imagine) will try to avoid the mistakes of other similar projects…
I understand it perfectly well: Combining “Dragon Ball” with “live action” is almost like an allergic reaction. Some independent projects managed to come out well after many sacrifices and whole years of waiting (Fall of Man and Light of Hope come to mind) and then things like the hilarious sweded version of the Cell saga… but in the background lurks Evolution. Even its screenwriter apologized to fans, and today it serves as a warning: A Dragon Ball live action has the odds stacked against it.
That said, we must recognize the courage of Cygnus Producciones and Dante Rubio, director and writer of Dragon Ball: La Leyenda de Gokú, which is being filmed in Chota, in northwestern Peru. One of the first pieces of content dates back to February 2018, when Dante published the official trailer on YouTube:
A year and a half after what we could call “radio silence”, the official Cygnus Producciones profile posted two new images, including the poster that serves as the central image here. In the other photo, two direct and unmistakable references are seen: the four-star sphere, and Goku's shoes.
Given its general profile, it's most likely that Dragon Ball: La Leyenda de Gokú begins from the beginning, exploring the origins of the “now not so small” Saiyan warrior. Unfortunately, precise details are scarce. There is no confirmed cast beyond what we see in the poster, nor a release date.
Still, I think we're going to wait. It would be a mistake to judge an entire project by a 42-second trailer and two images. With a bit of luck, maybe it will be ready before the end of the year, and it won't be worse than Evolution. Now that I think about it, can one be worse than Evolution…?
