At the beginning of April, we shared with our readers the confirmation that the great giant robot fight between MegaBots Inc. from the United States and the Japanese company Suidobashi Heavy Industry would take place in August. Well... we owe them a massacre! As a preview, MegaBots published a new trailer in which we can observe a practice session with Eagle Prime, the first robot of the MegaBot MK3 class.
Mecha enthusiasts have tried to temper their expectations, and even view the whole situation with some skepticism, but the idea of two giant robots fighting is irresistible. Usually, this is the point where I mention Robot Jox, BattleTech, the Gundam saga, Patlabor, Macross-Robotech, Pacific Rim and its sequel… I could keep going until next week. In essence, we grew up with giant robots battling, and we're going to hold onto any chance of it happening in real life. That brings us to the duel between Suidobashi Heavy Industry's Kuratas and the new MegaBots Inc. robot, Eagle Prime. Want to know how different it is from previous models? If the answer is yes, nothing better than an official trailer to confirm it:
The only way to make this presentation "more American" would be with extra explosions and a couple of bikini-clad women, but for now we'll settle for a robot capable of sliding across the asphalt, easily knocking down a wall of barrels, firing giant paintballs (with an "experimental ammunition" that explodes), and finally ripping off part of another MegaBot's cockpit. Eagle Prime retains the same weight as the MK3 series with 12 tons, measures 4.87 meters tall, uses a Chevrolet LS3 V8 engine with 430 horsepower, and its total cost amounts to $2.5 million.
Now, where is the Kuratas? What is Suidobashi doing? The last video on their YouTube channel was the response to the challenge... two years ago. The Japanese silence gives rise to many hypotheses, but if the fight was indeed scheduled for September (yes, they moved it a month), we hope to see a much more agile and elaborate version that can beat the Eagle Prime to a pulp.
