The web is full of platforms and free resources for playing chess the traditional way, but there are also plenty of variants that change the rules with a creative twist, or even do away with them entirely. We still remember the madness of Rogess (chess and role-playing at the same time), and today it's Echo Chess's turn—a puzzle that forces us to clear the board in a very special way: Our piece transforms into what we eat, always.
Many chess players look down on rapid games, but chess is a game that deserves to be explored from different angles. More pieces, fewer pieces, boards of different sizes, time limits, moves... the list goes on. With that in mind, we arrive at Echo Chess, a development by Sami Ramly that caught us immediately.
Echo Chess: Eat, Change, Eat
Echo Chess adopts a daily challenge format similar to Wordle, and its rules are very simple: We control the white pieces, and it's always our turn, meaning the black pieces stay still. Our piece becomes the one we eat with the color changed, but we can eat other white pieces if necessary. The goal is to eliminate the black pieces in as few moves as possible, but that's not all: we also have to avoid obstacles on the board, which appear as darker brown squares.
It sounds quite complicated at first, but there's no need to worry. The best starting point is the Daily Classic challenge, which tends to be a bit more accessible. Daily Epic presents adverse conditions (e.g., multiple pawns that make cleaning difficult), and finally there's Zen Mode, which behaves like a Gauntlet level with a time limit.
To finish, Echo Chess keeps a full archive of challenges, and it's possible to access that content as long as we agree to share our mobile number (!) to create a free account. Personally, I think the daily puzzles are more than enough. Link below!
