Artificial intelligence may be “the future,” but that future requires understanding and learning. There is a lot to demystify about artificial intelligence, mainly what it can and cannot do, and that is how we arrive at “Elements of AI”, a series of free online courses prepared by the University of Helsinki and the company Reaktor. This initiative started in 2018 with the idea of reaching 1 percent of the European Union, but students from more than 110 countries already participate, and it keeps gaining traction.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
There are very complex and advanced aspects behind artificial intelligence, but that same difficulty also manifests on the surface, to the point that no one can answer with absolute precision a simple question: What is artificial intelligence? Is it “intelligence demonstrated by machines,” as Wikipedia says? Is it a group of devices that interpret their environment and make decisions based on the information they obtain? Or is it simply “everything a traditional computer cannot do”?
So, rather than get an answer, we must develop one. Different institutions around the world have recognized this need and have begun to publish multiple courses and tutorials online so that the public can improve its relationship with artificial intelligence. One of those institutions is the University of Helsinki, which together with Reaktor created the platform “Elements of AI”, completely free.
What Does the Course Require?
No previous experience or knowledge of programming or mathematics is needed to start. The only requirement is creating an account and going through its chapters. Its entire first phase focuses on trying to define artificial intelligence, avoiding “placeholder words,” and discouraging the use of “artificial intelligence” as an accounting expression… a mistake I have made on more than one occasion.
The introduction to artificial intelligence has a total of six chapters, while the second part will be dedicated to the construction of an artificial intelligence method. This is where the course recommends certain basic Python knowledge to make the most of it (not coincidentally, given its popularity), but it is not obligatory by any means. Now, the question many readers often ask: What about the language? The translation process of “Elements of AI” will reach all languages of the European Union, therefore we will see a Spanish version very soon.
