The entire world is waiting for the official release of Fallout 76. There are still many doubts about its multiplayer mode, and the early beta reviews weren't exactly positive, but everything will be resolved one way or another on November 14. Now, if '76' doesn't interest you, I have something much better for you: Fallout: New California. This New Vegas mod has been in the oven for over seven years, but in the last few hours its developers enabled the download of beta 202, essentially finished in terms of content and gameplay.
"Country Roads, Take Me Home, To The Place I Belong..." Judging by the early comments on Fallout 76, it seems the best part of the game will be its music. Bethesda already warned players that there will be bugs and other "spectacular problems" in the initial version. We definitely appreciate the honesty, but after so many games under its wing, the logical thing would be for Bethesda to improve its code. I've tried not to fall into the hype or the anti-hype, however, I think the jump to online multiplayer isn't the best for the saga. Fortunately, the previous titles haven't gone anywhere, and their modding capability allows us to continue expanding the Fallout universe in incredible ways. One of the best examples out there is Fallout: New California.
Fallout: New California: The War Doesn't Change, and Fans Make Magic
The first time we talked about this gigantic mod was last April but today we can say with total confidence that its download is now available, free of charge. Fallout: New California serves as a prequel to New Vegas, chronologically set between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3/NV/4. The New California Republic is a disaster, a warlord named Juan Elsdragon rises among the Raiders with the intention of conquering everything, and as expected, you'll be right in the middle of that conflict. Raised by the explorers of Vault 18, your character must venture into the apocalyptic desert, finding allies and enemies alike.
The download of Fallout: New California is in beta 202, meaning the beta 200 we talked about in April has received two additional patches. In total it's 6.62 gigabytes, so we need to be patient. There are several technical details to follow before installing New California. If our build of New Vegas comes from Steam, Humble Bundle, or the original DVD, we need the famous 4 GB patch (the GOG edition already includes it). DLC or the Ultimate Edition are not mandatory. As mod organizers they recommend Nexus Vortex or Mod Organizer 2, and several optional mods to improve the experience. You have plenty of time until the 14th. Why not download a copy?
