Video game adaptations have a long history... mostly terrible, largely thanks to the empty efforts of the horrible Uwe Boll and his "dantesque films". And even the most fervent Angelina Jolie fan would supposedly admit that the Tomb Raider movies weren't the best at the time. So why does Alicia Vikander, current Hollywood girl, sign up for stardom as Lara Croft in a reboot of the action-adventure series? Weren't there other Marvel superheroes available?

Critics have reacted with a predictable nose to Hollywood's departure from Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, and the film has been rated only 50% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. And yet, a quick look at the site's summary of its best and worst video game reviews suggests that, after all, it might not be such a bad score. In fact, it's the highest rating in history for this type of film, sharing that honor with Resident Evil: Vendetta from last year.

Despite not getting along much with critics, Jolie's season as Lara Croft managed the feat of establishing her as one of the female action heroes who have been most profitable in the last 20 years, bringing her to the screen in films like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt, etc.
Vikander, very active on her profile and on Instagram, has been able to create her own unique form of female menace, as exemplified by her sinister role as a flirtatious robot in Alex Garland's Ex Machina, and she seems poised to hold her own as a genuine archaeological explorer.
