Creating music doesn't have to cost a fortune in hardware. If you're just starting out, you should know that there are many free, fully online tools to take advantage of. One of the most interesting is GridSound, which acts as a DAW (digital audio workstation) right in your browser, without downloading any plugins or additional modules.

One of the most friendly and simple tools we've seen for music creation came from the folks in Mountain View, and it isn't even a dedicated app. The Song Maker experiment is great for all ages, and the best part is it requires no downloads or account creation. Along the same lines is Drumbit, though it's a much more advanced resource, packed with kits, channels, and effects.
GridSound: a DAW in your browser
Of course, we're not trying to convince any professionals here. If you're already fully devoted to music, you probably have a good idea of what you need to work with, but if you're just beginning, you should take a look at each of the options we've mentioned. Today we'd like to add one more, and it goes by the name GridSound.
For now, GridSound lets you create, save, and re-edit compositions, undo and redo, use the piano roll, a synthesizer and a drumloop, and activate the mixer. However, its developer admits there are many functions yet to implement. The mixer only has one effect, and there's no support for external instruments. At the same time, the synthesizer is basic, and the documentation leaves a lot to be desired.
Even so, one of the most impressive aspects of GridSound is that it was designed from scratch: pure JavaScript with access to the Web Audio API, no external dependencies. Maybe some mobile browser can't load it completely, but recent builds of Chrome and Firefox work fine.
Without a doubt, GridSound is a work in progress, so we need to be patient. The potential is enormous, and we hope it can add additional functions very soon.
