HomePod mini 2 can serve as a Mac’s default speaker when the Mac supports Wi-Fi 6E or later and the speaker runs HomePod software 27.2 or later. Apple supports one speaker or a stereo pair. The Wi-Fi requirement applies to the Mac itself; 9to5Mac reports that it does not require a Wi-Fi 6E router.

Check the Mac and HomePod requirements
Wi-Fi 6E is a wireless networking standard. Apple’s compatibility rule is about the Mac’s wireless hardware, so check the specifications for your exact model rather than assuming every Apple-silicon Mac qualifies. HomePod software 27.2 or later is a separate requirement.
| Compatibility check | Requirement or examples |
| Mac wireless hardware | Wi-Fi 6E or later, according to Apple. |
| Mac families | Macworld lists Mac mini with M2/M2 Pro or later; MacBook Pro with M2 Pro/M2 Max or later; Mac Studio with M2 Max/M2 Ultra or later; Mac Pro with M2 Ultra; and iMac and MacBook Air with M3 or later. |
| HomePod software | Version 27.2 or later. |
| Speaker setup | One HomePod mini 2 or a stereo pair. |
Those Mac families are examples reported by Macworld. The Wi-Fi 6E requirement remains the decisive check for your particular computer. Macworld also distinguishes the new default-output mode from sending audio to older HomePod minis through AirPlay.
One speaker or a stereo pair?
Either setup works: Apple supports a single HomePod mini 2 or a stereo pair as the Mac’s default output. Kazuto Kusakari, who tested a pre-sale unit, preferred a pair for stereo width and richness, while saying one speaker could fill a room. If you choose two, Apple’s supported configuration is a stereo pair.
What the short listening test found
During roughly half a day with a pre-sale unit, Kusakari reported no delay he could perceive while checking system sounds, video playback, Apple Music startup and audio from a MacBook Pro. He also said voices stayed in sync in the clips he watched. That is his subjective listening impression from those scenarios.
What default output plays
Apple says default output carries all Mac audio, including movies, games and video calls. That makes the feature relevant beyond listening to music at a desk.
If you’re also weighing the broader differences between generations, NeoTeo’s earlier HomePod mini 2 versus the original comparison covers that question.
Apple’s announced U.S. price
Apple’s October 13, 2026 announcement listed the HomePod mini 2 at $149 in the United States.
