How to Create a DNS and Wildcard Subdomain from cPanel

We are going to explain the steps so you can add a DNS wildcard entry and a wildcard subdomain on your web server, using the control panel. A wildcard DNS entry can be used for many things, for example to generate a wildcard SSL certificate. In this way you will provide a secure connection to all domains and subdomains of the hosting.

You will also be able to direct users to your site even if they don't type the triple "W" or when they only type two "W's". If you want to create a wildcard DNS using an IP for your cloud service, we recommend you read the following article.

Create a DNS Wildcard

First, log in to your cPanel. Then, go to the "Domains" section and click on "Zone Editor".

Once there, select the main domain and click on "Manage". Remember that you would have previously created the domain from "Add Domain".

• In "Type", select "A" from the dropdown list (this may change according to your needs).
• As the record name, enter a '*'.
• Unless you need to insert a custom TTL, you can leave the default value of 14,400.
• You only have to add the server's IP address. Generally, the server's IP address comes by default, but you can change it.

At this point, the wildcard DNS record is configured. You just have to click "Save" and that's it!

Create a Wildcard Subdomain from cPanel

First, you'll have to click on "Subdomains". In the "Subdomain" section, enter '*' and automatically in "Root" the path "_wildcard_" will be inserted.

Now you should go back to "Zone Editor" and, within this section, verify that both the main domain and the created subdomain are directed to the same IP address (you can modify the type and the IP address).

As you can see, creating a DNS and a wildcard subdomain from your server's control panel is a simple task.
