Memory, chat history, and deletion are separate controls. For a searchable conversation with memory off, Claude lets you choose that setting before the first message. For a thorough ChatGPT cleanup, OpenAI says you may also need to remove the original chat, a saved file, or connected-app access that contains the same detail.
What AI memory does
An assistant’s memory is saved or retrieved context that can shape later responses. It is different from searching old chats: ChatGPT’s memory can draw on saved memories, past conversations, custom instructions, files, and connected apps, depending on your plan and region. Claude also separates its generated topic memories from its paid-plan chat search. OpenAI and Anthropic’s Claude help page describe controls that vary by account or workspace.
| Assistant | If you want to limit reuse | If you want to remove a remembered detail |
| ChatGPT | Turn off memory or Reference chat history in Settings → Personalization → Memory. | Delete the memory and relevant chat; remove a saved file or disconnect an app if it also contains the detail. |
| Claude | Pause memory, or turn it off for an individual chat before sending the first message. | Delete the memory topic. Deleting the chat alone does not remove a memory generated from it. |
| Gemini | WWWhatsnew reports that Gemini memory depends on Keep Activity being enabled. | WWWhatsnew reports deleting relevant conversations from Gemini Apps Activity and disconnecting a connected app that contains the same information. |
The controls address different tasks. Turning off future use can leave the information’s original source in place, so choose the removal steps that match where the detail came from.
ChatGPT: remove the memory and its sources
To remove a remembered detail from ChatGPT, delete the saved memory and the chat it came from. If the same information is in a saved file or a connected app, OpenAI says to remove the file or disconnect that app too. “Don’t mention this again” changes future personalization, but does not delete the underlying source. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ describes these steps.
Turning off Reference chat history schedules information derived from past chats for deletion within 30 days. It does not delete the original conversations or saved memories. A temporary chat does not create or update memory, and you can choose before starting whether it uses existing personalization. Saving a temporary chat turns it into a regular chat. OpenAI also says temporary chats may be retained for safety and security.
Claude: keep a searchable chat or use incognito
To keep a conversation in your history without letting it use or add memory, turn off memory for that chat before its first message. Claude keeps the chat in history, where it remains available to chat search. Incognito works differently: the conversation is not saved to ordinary chat history.
Claude’s Pause control keeps existing memories but stops using them and adding to them. Reset permanently deletes memory, including project memories. Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove a memory entry generated from it.
For Team and Enterprise accounts, incognito chats remain subject to organizational retention and data exports. Anthropic specifies at least 30 days of safety retention for organizational incognito chats; that duration applies to this organizational setting.
Gemini’s reported US memory-summary limit
In a guide published October 30, 2026, WWWhatsnew reported that Gemini’s summary of memorized information was available only to US users with a Google AI plan, and only in English. The guide also reported that Gemini memory depends on a personal account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity being enabled. Those details are reported product guidance, not a substitute for the product-specific settings that appear in your account.
A portable context file is a manual option
A separate file of preferences, project details, or constraints can give you a context record to provide to different assistants. In his tutorial, Jeff Su describes global, project-specific, and user-managed memory as distinct layers. A user-managed file requires you to maintain and supply that context; it is not automatic synchronization between ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
