The hypothesis is simple: a service that isn't used wastes resources. In an era with single-core systems at 300 MHz and 128 or 256 MB of RAM, these low-level tweaks were vital to getting the most out of our computers.

Over the years it became very complicated to keep up with services (Microsoft adds more with each new version of Windows), but the Black Viper portal dedicated itself to compiling recommended configurations and other details about the most critical services. With Windows 10 in the equation, Black Viper extended its guides to the new operating system, but stopped in April of this year. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean the information is obsolete, however, applying so much data by hand becomes tedious in record time. That's where BlackViperScript comes in.

BlackViperScript is a PowerShell-compatible script that helps us optimize Windows 10 services by automatically applying Black Viper's recommendations. The script starts 'disabled' under versions after the April update of Windows 10, but it's possible to disable that restriction by visiting the Script Options section and clicking Skip Build Check. In the Services Options tab we define how broad the adjustments to services will be. 'Min' limits changes to a small group of services, while 'All' extends to all.

Under Service Configurations we have Default (i.e., the Windows values), Safe (the most conservative changes), and Tweaked for maximum performance. Finally, in Services List we can customize the list of services that will be affected. We click Run Script, wait a bit, and reboot the computer once BlackViperScript finishes its work.

The best way to evaluate BlackViperScript is to install Windows 10 in a virtualized environment, apply the All / Tweaked configuration and observe the operating system's behavior. If you don't notice anything strange, it's most likely safe to repeat the process on your main installation, but you might need one of these services someday, so don't let your guard down. BlackViperScript is a tool we must use at our own risk, especially on 32-bit Windows 10, and on builds after the April edition.
