How to program your PC shutdown

Controlling when a computer shuts down is very useful for those who need to step away from the desk for a while, but the programming process in Windows is not the most comfortable in the world. Instead of struggling with creating tasks or the shutdown command in the command line, today we offer an alternative called Adios - Shutdown Timer, which will allow you to schedule the shutdown of your PC in a couple of clicks, or configure special actions such as hibernation and suspension.

Let's imagine you have a very long download ahead. 40 minutes? An hour? It's the last thing you'll do with the computer that day, but there's not much desire to extend the watch. Some download managers allow us to set the computer to shut down when it finishes, but in most cases, we must program that action ourselves.

The most direct method involves a system console with elevated privileges and the shutdown command, specifying the delay in seconds. Another option is to dive into the waters of Scheduled Tasks, which is not very intuitive. Fortunately, there is a shortcut in the form of external applications, and one of them is Adios - Shutdown Timer.

The interface of Adios - Shutdown Timer. Don't worry, it's easy to use.

Adios - Shutdown Timer is a development by Dr. Bernd Haendel, and in the last few hours it received an update to version 1.2.7.4. Its interface is simple and easy to decipher: On the left we find a column with the five tasks we can schedule: Shutdown, Restart, Lock, Logoff, and Hibernation.

The three buttons at the bottom indicate the time the system should remain inactive before shutting down (Idle), the fixed scheduled time (Time), or the exact time (Clock). Desktop creates a shortcut on the desktop, and Startup configures Adios - Shutdown Timer to start with the operating system.

Parental control? Run a process before shutdown? Adios - Shutdown Timer lets you do that.

In the Specials section we discover time limits (designed for parental control), and options to wait for a process or a download before shutting down the computer. Adios - Shutdown Timer is free, has no portable version, and language support is limited to English and German, but I guess that won't give you many problems.
