Replacing a noisy fan with a quieter one may not be an option depending on the cost or the system configuration, and there are also cases where software-based control simply does not exist—something quite common in retro computers. Many online tutorials teach us to clean and lubricate PC fans to improve overall operation. However, sometimes no lubricant is enough, and the fan is naturally noisy when it runs at maximum speed. In modern systems, the magic of PWM, special BIOS/UEFI profiles, and software solutions let us set parameters to limit acoustic chaos. But what can we do when those controls are missing? Recently, Necroware had to face this issue on his retro PC and shared an alternative that deserves your attention.

Reducing Fan Noise by Limiting Voltage

Necroware begins his video with a brief explanation: the red fan in his retro PC looks quite good, but without a speed control available on the motherboard, it ends up howling at an average of 3,400 RPM. The go-to solution is to limit the voltage with a resistor, and on the market we find options that bring the original 12 volts down to 7 or 9 volts. If you decide to follow the DIY route and install a resistor yourself, you should calculate the heat dissipation first, or the resistor you choose could turn into an Olympic torch.

Necroware's alternative is to install a step-down module as a "man-in-the-middle" between the motherboard connector and the fan. These modules are much more efficient; a five-pack costs less than 8 euros, and its variable resistor lets us modify the voltage to our liking using just a screwdriver. In fact, nothing stops us from adjusting its voltage outside the PC and determining what noise level is acceptable.

To finish, many comments propose a second popular solution for old computers: connecting the fan to a Molex using the +12V lines as positive and +5V as negative (as shown in this video). That brings the final voltage to 7 volts and reduces the RPM. Personally, I used to go in the opposite direction, connecting fans to +12V and -5V, effectively overvolting at 17 volts. The computer would turn into a helicopter... but well cooled.
