How to Sync Subtitles with SubShifter

It's really frustrating when you settle down to watch a movie or an episode of your favorite series and, when you load the subtitles, you realize they're out of sync and the dialogue anticipates or lags behind the action. But don't despair, because with SubShifter the process of synchronizing subtitles is very simple. We're going to introduce you to an online service that changes all the timestamps of a subtitle file so you can sync them to your video file.

SubShifter is ideal when the subtitles and the movie come from different sources and aren't on the same time scale (frame differences). It's a simple method that doesn't require editing the subtitle.

How to sync subtitles with SubShifter

The first thing you need to do is go to the SubShifter website. Then, select one of the two methods it offers. Regarding the subtitle format, it only supports the SRT format, which is currently compatible with the most popular media players.

Shift Method

The Shift method is the simplest. Simply load the file from 'Browse...' and then enter the time shift in the 'Time shift' field. If the subtitles are ahead of the dialogue, you'll need to enter a negative time (e.g., -8.4). On the other hand, if the subtitles lag behind the dialogue, you'll need to enter a positive value (e.g., 8.4).

When you're done, just click the 'Resync!' button and wait a few seconds for the file to automatically download with the new timestamps in SRT format.

Linear Correction Method (beta)

From 'Browse...' load the file. Then enter two pairs of timestamps in 'Time #1' and 'Time #2':

• In the first column 'Old time', you'll need to insert the time at which the out-of-sync subtitles appear.
• In the second column 'Correct time', you'll need to insert the exact dialogue time (when the subtitles should appear).
• In 'For the first time' 'Time #1', you'll need to insert the time of the first subtitle.
• In 'For the second time' 'Time #2', you'll need to place a subtitle that appears later in the video.

Then press 'Resync!' and the modified file will be downloaded.

The first method is much simpler than the second, but the 'Linear correction' option is more precise. SubShifter is a free website that doesn't require registration and doesn't contain malicious programs.
