Got a new GPU? Before you play, our main recommendation is to prepare a clean environment for its installation, removing old drivers from previous hardware. The problem is that their uninstallers don't remove all system files, and there's always the risk of a later conflict. If you want to uninstall drivers without leaving a trace, the best answer remains Display Driver Uninstaller, a classic Wagnardsoft tool that was recently updated.
Upgrading your GPU isn't such a simple process (especially if we look closely at the prices of recent generations), but sometimes we can find very interesting shortcuts with previous models, or a good opportunity in the second-hand market. That said, let's imagine that you already have the graphics card in your possession.
If the plan is to remove another GPU from your system, you'll need to uninstall any existing drivers… and it's not enough to use official mechanisms. As much as we don't like the idea, traces, libraries, and/or registry entries always remain that can trigger all kinds of conflicts. Fortunately, there is a solution: Uninstall drivers without leaving a trace using the classic Display Driver Uninstaller, which just received an update on Wagnardsoft's official forum.
Display Driver Uninstaller: The Most Solid Option for Uninstalling GPU Drivers
The program is distributed with a normal installer, or in a portable version to run from a temporary folder. When opening DDU for the first time, some basic warnings appear: There are no guarantees, it's recommended to backup your data, and depending on the problem, it may improve or worsen the situation. In my personal experience, Display Driver Uninstaller has always done its job perfectly, removing old drivers from Nvidia and AMD alike. The good news is that it also extended its support to Intel ARC hardware, whose drivers are… a work in progress.
The key to getting good results is to heed its suggestion: Open Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode. The operating system blocks access to many files "when they are in use," so entering safe mode gives DDU greater chances of performing a deep clean. With the first option ("Clean and restart") it should be more than enough, but if we're going to install a new graphics card, the third button ("Clean and shutdown") is the right one.
Display Driver Uninstaller can also uninstall audio drivers like Realtek and Creative (although support is listed as under construction). In its configuration menu we see advanced parameters for Nvidia and AMD, the removal of monitors (visible and hidden), deletion of Vulkan libraries, and even blocking driver downloads via Windows Update (very useful, considering that Microsoft's versions are older).
