To check a file, open SynthID Detector, upload a supported image, video, or audio file, and review whether the tool finds a SynthID signal. The result concerns that watermark, not whether the file is AI-generated, authentic, or truthful in general.
What SynthID Detector checks
SynthID Detector looks for SynthID watermarks in media from organizations that have adopted the technology. The portal currently lists NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google, and Kakao. It is not a general-purpose AI detector, so a file made with an unsupported system may have no SynthID signal to find.
Check the file format first
The portal accepts these image, video, and audio extensions:
| Media type | Supported file extensions |
| Images | JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF, GIF |
| Video | MP4, MOV, WEBM |
| Audio | WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A |
How to use SynthID Detector
Choose the highest-quality version of the file you can access. The portal recommends this because heavy compression and editing can affect detection.
- Open SynthID Detector at synthid.com.
- Select a supported file or drag it into the upload area.
- Review the result for a SynthID signal.
What a detected or missing signal means
A detected watermark means the media was likely generated or edited with a SynthID-enabled model. It does not identify the person who made or uploaded the file, or establish whether its content is true. Google says false triggers on media without a SynthID watermark are possible, though very rare.
A “not detected” result means the tool found no confident signal. It does not rule out AI generation or manipulation: the file may come from an organization that has not adopted SynthID, or editing and compression may have degraded the signal.
Why the source file matters
AI with Surya reported detecting six of eight files described as watermarked in a creator-run test. The video also describes detection misses after transformations such as screenshots and vertical reposts. That result is an individual test, not a standardized accuracy estimate.
