IBM announced general availability of self-hosted IBM Bob on September 30, 2026, giving enterprise teams a customer-managed deployment option for its agentic software-development platform. IBM names on-premises, private-cloud, sovereign-cloud and air-gapped environments for the deployment.
IBM Bob supports software work across understanding, planning, execution and validation. The self-hosted option brings that development and modernization platform into infrastructure managed by the customer.
Which models IBM lists for each configuration
IBM lists two models for self-hosted configurations and four for hybrid or private-SaaS configurations. The categories differ in where the model runs and how the customer connects to it.
| Configuration | Model location or connection | Models IBM lists | Customer’s role |
| Self-hosted | Runs in customer-managed infrastructure | NVIDIA Nemotron; Poolside Laguna | Sources access to a supported model, then installs and manages it |
| Hybrid or private-SaaS | Connects to an external model service through an approved private-SaaS pattern | Claude Sonnet 5.0; Claude Opus 4.8; Gemini 3.7 Flash; OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol | Sources and provides access to a supported model |
Customers provide access to the supported model they choose. IBM identifies bring-your-own-license (BYOL) as an option for eligible existing model investments.
What customers manage
The selected model and deployment configuration determine where inference—the processing that produces a model’s output—takes place and how code and development context are processed. IBM says a supported self-hosted configuration can keep code, development context and build artifacts within the customer-managed environment.
That control over deployment architecture and inference location can help organizations align a setup with their requirements, but self-hosting does not itself certify a customer’s environment as compliant. The organization still manages its infrastructure, model access and configuration.
IBM lists an IDE experience, BobShell, parallel tool calling, an agent harness, skills and modes among Bob’s capabilities. It also names three optional extensions: IBM Bob Premium Package for Java Modernization, IBM Bob Premium Package for i and IBM Bob Premium Package for Z. Applicable licensing and deployment requirements apply to those packages.
Why data residency matters to enterprise teams
IBM’s October 1, 2026 press release cited a June 2026 IBM Institute for Business Value report in which 68% of surveyed executives said meeting data-residency and sovereignty requirements across geographies was challenging.
