Without a doubt, subtitles have made it easier to watch audio-visual content from anywhere in the world. Besides understanding the dialogue, we respect the original performance of the actors (in fiction) or narrators. For this reason, many of us believe that dubbing audio-visual content is an affront to the work of art. Today, YouTube videos have subtitles, but in many cases they are in English or have speed issues. This is where the four add-ons for translating subtitles into several languages and enhancing the YouTube subtitle experience come into play. You can also use the extensions to learn a new language in a fun and unconventional way.
Dualsub
Let's start with Dualsub, a platform that will show your YouTube video in two different languages (subtitles). The subtitles will be in the language you selected, plus English. Once you install the translator in Google Chrome, you'll see the extension icon in the top right corner. However, you won't need to use the icon to translate subtitles because below the video title you'll see a box “DS”, where you'll find two columns to configure the video's subtitles.
Two captions for YouTube, Netflix & Amazon
This extension is very similar to Dualsub, but as its name suggests it translates the video into two languages at the same time and also works on Netflix and Amazon platforms. Once you install the extension in the Chrome browser, you'll need to click the extension icon (in the browser bar) and set your subtitle preferences. It supports more than 100 languages and has extra settings such as customizing the space between the two subtitles, among other options.
Wisesub
Wisesub has a different concept from the two options listed above, because the interface translates the original YouTube subtitles when you pass your mouse cursor over them. The add-on also creates a vocabulary history as you use it. Another feature of Wisesub is the large number of languages you'll find in its database.
Unitrans
We'll finish with Unitrans, a smart subtitle translator. Simply open YouTube, then click on the add-on icon and from its columns you'll select the languages. It also works on broadcasting platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Ted, etc.
With the extensions for translating subtitles on YouTube, you'll be able to subtitle videos in your native language, or learn another language while watching audio-visual content.
