A group of researchers from the University of Manchester took more than 1,500 radiographs to create a three-dimensional model of the Enigma machine with an impressive level of detail in the rotors, wiring, and other parts that usually require the complete disassembly of the unit.

The Enigma machine in question dates from 1941, was built in Berlin, and is believed to have operated in the Austrian Interior Ministry in Vienna. It is the latest to receive official verification and registration, bringing the total of identified machines to 274 (other sources say 284).

Its owner, David Cripps, pointed out that this is the first time that details of Enigma have been obtained at this level using a non-invasive technique.

It is necessary to remember that the vast majority of Enigma machines were destroyed by the Nazis during the last months of the war, and the units in British hands suffered the same fate after the end of the armed conflict, to preserve the secret profile of the work done at Bletchley Park.
